Exercise and Videogames

Video Game exerciseby Ted Vitale

Exercise and videogames, these two words are barley ever used in the same sentence. However, a recent study conducted by Americas Council on Exercise (ACE) using Playstation’s version of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) shows that Exercise videogames can the take place of real exercise. Being a retired college athlete and Professional powerlifter I know a thing or two about exercise. These games are challenging “according to the study published by ACE the participants burned: 5.9 kcal/min on light mode (comparable to an easy walk on a treadmill), 6.7 kcal/min on standard mode (equivalent to riding a bike about 12 to 14 miles and hour) and 8.1 kcal/min on difficult mode (similar to the benefits obtained with high-impact aerobics).” I used to own this game in high school and played it once in a while in college my speed trainer and powerlifting coach used to say “If your going to play and videogames play that weird dancing game because you should always be productive even in your down time.” The game aids footwork, decision-making and timing while in an anaerobic state and overall fitness it is a goldmine for anyone who is willing to get a little sweaty and have some fun at the same time. And with Nintendo’s recent release of the Wii a lot of other sports games are making kids get their butts off the couch. Wish I had this kind of technology when I was a kid………

Ted, I enjoyed this article and agree that it is important to always be productive, even in your down time and also that kids should be getting their butts of the couch. I used to own DDR and I actually really enjoyed it. I thought it was a lot of fun and it makes you feel as though you are actually doing something good for you while playing a video game which is normally unheard of. For example, I have a younger brother who is almost 17. He plays video games ALL THE TIME. That is seriously all he does when he is not at school or at work. There is no way that is healthy but I cant get his butt off the couch! He is good at DDR and every other game that he plays, however he sold the game back to GameStop and has not played it since. He is more interested in Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

This is a pretty intresting article especially for someone like me who is not fond of exercising at the gym but really desires to tone. This is an ideal way to get in shape before the summer especially for those who love to dance. However as stated above this game is challenging and does work you to your core, i have played it before and have literally felt as though i had just came out of the gym. So i do recommend this game for all ages, anyone who wants and needs to get in shape and dislikes of the gym and hard core jogging and running exercises. Dance your stress and gutt away in an exciting innovative way.

This is a great most Ted. I have done some research and found out about the new release that is coming for the wii called wii fit. Here is a site about it.

It has a video showing some of the cool things it can do such as yoga and arobics. It looks like a lot of fun. It is just another way to help kids exercise more. Nothing compares to going out and running or lifting weights but this is a good technology to have if you just want to have fun and exercise at the same time.

In some gym that I have been in have seen game like dance dance revolution in them. I think that game like dance dance revolution is good substation of cardio. Cardio is any exercise that can work out the heart, any exercise that can get you heart beating. I played five your of college football, and I was always working on a type of equipment called the speed later. With the speed later you need to move your feet very quickly throw the boxes. It to develop fast feet, a game like dance dance revolution can also develop fast feet. I had fast feet, but I suck at these tips of games. It a great thing to do in your spree time but I fell you still need to do other kind of exercise.

This article is interesting because it talks about two things that you would never think would be in the same sentence- video games and excercising. I have heard in the past that you can burn calories by playing DDR because of the active movement that you have to do in order to play the game. I’ve played it once before and remember how challenging it could be because you need to be able to pay attention and move quickly on the pad at the right time. I think that this might be one of the more acceptable video games that parents would get their kids, because they dont have to worry about their kids sitting around all day playing a regular video game. With this game, their kids are able to be just as active as if they were playing a game of basketball with their friends or running on a track for a certain period of time.

I like the idea of the dance video games for the simple fact that “they get kids up off the couch and from in front of the TV screen to become active. This is very important as our new technological generation is constantly fixated in front of computer and TV screens while physical activity are put to the side. Dance Dance revolution is a great exercise alternative for sum as you are able to compete, be active and have fun at the same time. I have not played on the dance revolution games since their arrival in arcades years ago. After reading this article however, it’s something i plan to do in the near future.

Video games substituting gym time? When I first started reading this article I automatically thought that cannot be right. People are always saying how bad video games are for children these days. The ‘reason’ we have more obesity in this world is because children are sitting on coaches playing video games instead of going out and playing sports. Now that I think about it these dance games do create a lot of motion and movement, which does burn calories. So playing these games is a great way for people who do not enjoy going to the gym to burn calories. More of these active video games would be helpful to allow more people to work out while having fun at the same time.
