Flu Season?

Flu Season - Rabbit Season - Duck SeasonThis week I hope to begin our study of the immune system.

This time of the year, it isn’t uncommon for many people to get run down and feel under the weather, but why is it that cold and flu season comes in the winter.

As The Straight Dope points out

“Winter is flu season, but not always. The influenza pandemic of 1918-19, which killed at least 20 million people worldwide, reached peak virulence in the most of the world during the late spring and summer and topped out in the U.S. in October.”

Might it be the weather change, that is a reasonable explanation for areas at this latitude and North – but why do we still see the outburst in L.A. and more tropical climates at this time?

Flu season is more than likely known to be in the end of fall and throught the winter months. I do believe that the weather change plays a major role in why flu season occurs. Our body becomes addapted to feeling warm and then their is a drastic freezing temperature. An explanation of why this happens in more tropical climates is because although there temperature never severely changes they too get minor temperature decresions and incresions. As stated above these changes causes our immune system to work differently causing our health to be in danger, this occurs because there is a new temperature that our bodies need to readapt to.

Like we have learned in class, bacteria likes to grow in dark, warm, moist areas which would explain why the flu would still be a problem in warm areas of the world such as L.A. Because it is warm in these areas, the flu is passed around much easier because the bacteria grows more and is passed around easily.
