Bacteria in Sports

Bacteria in sports can be a major problem especially in contact sports such as football and wrestling.  My personal experience is with a staff infection that was spreading on one of my football teams.  During my freshmen year at Sacred Heart University they almost canceled the season because of the spread of the staff infection. Ever since I started playing college football there has been an infection on my team and it has been a problem.  There was an article that came out in USA Today in 2003 about skin infections and bacteria in football.  Gary Mihoces interviewed David Edell, about his experience with bacteria in sports.  Edell is an athletic trainer who worked for 13 high schools in Texas.  Edell said that it was the MRSA bacteria that infected a number of high schools in Texas.  He told reporters that the best way to combat any bacteria is good hygiene.  This also was the case of the staff infection that I had personal experience with.  There are many cases of it spreading so fast because of poor hygiene on the sports team.

Bacteria can easily be spread through skin to skin contact so it is not hard to believe that infections can occur through playing sports. Sports such as football and wrestling involves much skin to skin contact and become agressive games when one has to tackle opposing team for the ball. Not everyone has the same hygine and sports causes individuals to perspire and get highly messy so it is agreeable that being healthy and clean (taking good care of oneself and hygiene) is the best way to minimize and prevent infections to go around.

It is no hidden fact that bacteria and infections can be easily contracted from skin to skin contact so it is no surprise that bacteria’s infections have been linked to sports. Many sports have skin to skin contact and can become agressive especially when one has to tackle their opponent. So yes it is agreeable that when dealing with sports one must keep themselve healthy and clean. Have a good hygiene and if you know you have an infection keep away from the team until symptoms are gone.
