Fractal Geometry

Posted by: biologyblog | November 2, 2008 | 4 Comments |

They’re odd-looking shapes you may never have heard of, but they’re everywhere around you—the jagged repeating forms called fractals. If you know what to look for, you can find them in the clouds, in mountains, even inside the human body.

Fractal patterns turn up everywhere in biology, from the irregular rhythm of the heart to basic eye function. The fractal nature of such physiological processes, which obey simple mathematical rules, offers hope of better diagnosis and treatment of problems as well as new insights into how such processes work.

This is great. There is an artist by the name of Alex Grey who makes amazing paintings that are fractal-like in appearance. You look at one thing and your eyes just move all around the canvas. He also designed the album art for the band Tool. Good find. Very interesting.

I remember briefly discussing this in algebra and trigonometry. I’ve seen the same thing in spiral sea shells too. It’s really neat looking.

This is very interesting. I never knew that these shapes, that we see everywhere, are called fractals. Good to know the nature of these processes offer better diagnosis and treatment.

Fractals are really neat. They just go on without end. I went on a website that had these and you could zoom in as much as you wanted to and the patern just kept on going. I looked at a small part of it and I thought that it would not have much on it but I was amazed at what I saw. There was just as many fractals as the bigger ones. they are very cool to see!
