Purple GM Tomatoes Could Fight Cancer And Increase Life Span

A group of scientists from the UK and other European nations created a genetically modified purple tomato.  This tomato was tested on mice and showed that this tomato extended the life span of cancer-susceptible mice.  Those mice who were tested and put on the diet of this new purple tomato extended their life span.  The scientists who came up with this idea and experiment took genes from the snapdragon plant (Antirrhinum) and inserted them into tomato plants.  This made the tomatoes high in anthocyanins.  The reasoning for this is because anthocyanins are known to help protect against various cancers and diseases.  The reason why the scientists picked the tomato was because the tomato naturally contains high levels of the antioxidant lycopene and flavonoids.  Research is still unclear with how the outcomes will be for humans but this research looks somewhat promising.

This article was interesting because it showed the advanced research on fruits and other foods that could help humans battle various diseases and cancers.  Although the public is less likely to buy a purple genetically modified tomato, there is great promise in the possibilities for future research.  Most people fail to get their daily dose of fruits and vegetables each day and by genetically modifying all those doses into this one purple tomato maybe people will be more likely to reach their daily amount of healthy nutrients.  There are many foods out there that can help decrease our risks of getting certain diseases, and hopefully this test will push that idea even further to make people more aware of the importance of fruits and vegetables in their diet.

These genetically enhanced purple tomatoes are a excellent source of the critical antioxidants that our bodies need to function properly. As long as there is no harmful side effects to these tomatoes, I would buy them to make sure I get the needed antioxidants.

Its really great that we are learning about how so many natural things such as fruits can be modified in order to be helpful to our society. Being able to battle diseases based off information like this is a really great step scientists have taken.

I really liked this article. I found it to be incredibly interesting that these European scientists actually created a purple tomato which is helping find more answers for different cures dealing with cancer. Even the fact that there was some significant effects is amazing. Really great comments!!!!

Wow, this is a really interesting article. It’s amazing that injecting something so simple as a tomato could help extend the life span of cancer-susceptible mice. I agree that although going to the store and buying a purple tomato may not be on the top of everyone’s list, if it proves to extend the life span, the color purple will not be an issue.

I am completely all for anything that will make me more healthy or even expand my life. More importantly, I love tomatoes, so basically I would be eating one of my favorite fruits and exanding my life at the same time. Basically, killing two birds with one stone. It is anamizing article to see that Europe is also contributing to see people healthier as the years unfold.

Its truly fascinating that scientist were able to find a potentially cancer helping remedy with the use of a tomato and mice. Research has continuously allowed us to grow and create new vaccines and medicines. I don’t think that the color of the tomato will be that big of an issue. If it can help wth cancer, I don’t think many people would care what color it is.

It is so amazing to see a tomato extending the life span of a mouse. Now a days, we are losing sight of what good things we should eat, seeing that many people are living off of fast food. It just goes to show that eating healthy is so important for your body. Now, if only a cure for Cancer would be discovered.

I enjoyed reading this article. It was very interesting how it could help cancer and make lives lonnger. Purple tomatoes may look different from all others and it’s certaintly different buy how it affects people. Everyone should eat purple tomatoes[:

I think that they should do that with more food to help get rid of other toxinsthat the food we eat distribute. It will be a good start for a healthier America.

moms are always trying to get their kids to eat their veggies so maybe kids will be more likely to eat this highly nutritius tomatoe considering that it is purple. how many purple tomatoes do you see around today? very few. maybe the kids will not know that it is a veggie and will eat it because of it’s uniue purple color. it’s something diffrent and knew so that is a good thing esspecialy since it is extremely healthy at the same time.

this tomato idea is brilliant! i personally HATE tomatoes but to genetically hance this food to have it prevent dozens of cancers? it would help a lot ini today’s world besides the fact the no one keeps their body healthy by eating right. it’s like a medicine you can eat whenever you want. pretty soon, thee expression ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ will be completely true….that is if we’re talking about tomatoes

I think that this is a very interesting idea. I would like to know more about the research before suggesting that we give it a try on humans. For instance, how long did it expand the life span of the sucesptible mice from getting cancer? Did they give it to mice once they had cancer and it helped them live longer? Did they eventually get it after a period of time while on the tomato diet? Will it expand life span even if for mice not sucesptible to cancer? The article is vague on situation details but overall it sounds like they are on to something. If it turns out that these tomatoes could help humans I wonder how much they would cost to buy probably not the same amount as the average tomato
