An animal called a Pyrenean Ibex that has been extinct for almost a decade now had been cloned in 2003 from frozen skin, however it has been noted that the clone died shorlty after birth. According to Charles Choi for National Geographic News, “Scientists had cloned endangered species before, but not one that had officially died out.” This is not necessarily a disappointment for scientists who studied the animal because it is common for such deaths to occur with clonig experiments. With this occurence, it actually helps improve the technology of cloning to help scientists make the process more efficient.

wow! that is soo cool if we can clone an animal that is extinct. we can bring back animals that are benificial for the earth that have been hunted to extinction. as we grow older technology will get more advanced and we just might be able to clone a dead animal and keep it alive for a long time to bring the species back. it’s good that we make mistakes cause we can learn from them for the future.

Hahah, this article is pretty awesome. It gives hope that any animal that is extinct or near extinct can come back in greater numbers. Even though in this article the clone died, the fact that he was born in the first place gives great hope to the scientists.

On one hand, it is extremely fascinating that we can bring animals back to life that were once/are extinct. Perhaps, they will benefit the earth in positive ways. However, on the other hand, it could potentially be extremely detrimental to the environment to bring back these animals. For example, would we attempt to bring back dinosaurs or woolly mammoths? Probably not, because they are better off extinct. Who gets to decide what is beneficial for society? Having the ability to bring the dead back to life is an extremely powerful thing, and if it were to fall into the wrong hands, hands of a “mad scientist” per say, we would have a very large problem on our hands. I am not sure the world is ready for cloning of this magnitude. However, this article is extremely interesting, it is an interesting idea to think about.

National Geographic had the best articles! Its cool how scientists are close to cloning a living instinct animal. It would be even cooler if they can clone dinosaurs like in Jurassic Park or if they can clone people and use them for organ donors for people who need it. That’s from the movie the Island. I think in the future it can be a possibility.

This is really interesting! I wonder what else they could try and bring back to life. This could have an impact on the “circle of life” if an extint species were to be reintroduced. This success was based on the similarity of the goat and the use of their eggs. What about species that do not reproduce with eggs?

This is really cool! I wonder if this would work on all animals and species. I wonder how old the specimen can be in order to use it for cloning? At the same time, this can be kind of weird to think about. Maybe this would lead to overpopulation on our planet??

I think its amazing how far we have come with science. I never realized it was possible to clone an animal that was extinct and that frozen skin could be used to aide cloning. Even though the animal did die after birth, its interesting to see that cloning is becoming more successful in our world today. I will be interested to see how much cloning advances in the future. Who knows, maybe one day we will be able to bring back an entire extinct species. This is truly a great discovery for scientists and hopefully this is the beginning of a completely new discovery.

I enjoyed reading this article. I have always found cloning very interesting. It is cool to see that technology is getting closer to cloning. Maybe one day it will become a safe and easy process and I can have my own clone.

This is pretty interesting. As I was reading this I thought of the TV show Kyle XY. In the show Kyle is a clone with no belly button. But in reference to this article, it is beneficial for cloning to try and save the species. Unfortunately, the clone died.

Technology is advancing every day, and maybe in the near future scientists can clone people. When that day comes, scientists will be prepared because of the testing on animals.

I think it is amazing that we can clone animals that are not around anymore. It is to bad that the clones do not turn out the right way most of the time so it is odd to have to put them down if they are deformed or are dying once they are born. I think that in many ways humans are playing God with things like cloning but we can learn alot from doing such research.

This article is pretty interesting. It shows that even though animals from millions of years ago who are extinct can still be able to come back. Although the animal died at birth it gives other animals from the past hope to come back
