Recently, 1,500 scientists attended the 50th annual Drosophila Research Conference. According to researchers, fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most important research animals in genetics. This insect has been used help broaden human knowledge of diseases,
including cancer and depression, and provide a cost-effective and efficient system for testing promising therapies. Beknownst to some, fruit flies and humans share many genes and proteins, making the fruit fly ideal for unraveling biological mysteries.  Embryologist and Drosophila researcher, Allan Spradling, can understand the misconception people may have about our relation to insects.  He stated, “It’s very, very hard for the average person or congressman to really believe that when we look at an insect it has anything to do with them. But … an organism that seems so foreign and different from us really taught us a lot about our own selves and our genome.”

Questions:

1. If the fuit fly is so significant to scientific research, why haven’t we heard alot about their contributions?

2. What seasons are fruit flies most active?

3. What causes them to become household pests?

This is cool! I give very little thought to the fruit fly, infact i usually just kill them when i see them. But i had no idea they were so useful in understanding science and even ourselves. This makes me wonder what type of contributions fruit flys have made. Or for that fact, how scientists are able to use them?

Actually I remember over the years hearing a lot about fruit flies and how the research being done with them has been scientifically beneficial. I do remember also that they had many genes. I do not remember that we share many genes with them though. It seems odd, considering how different we are, but I guess this just means that certain genes in them and in us are turned off, otherwise we would look more similar. I hope that the lack of understanding on the part of politicians does not stifle funding researchers would need to discover helpful cures and remedies for us.

I had no idea the fruit fly of all things in this world could be used for such important human research. This is interesting and very important research. The great thing about fruit flies is that there is always enough of them.

I had no idea that the fruit fly was very important to our understanding of science. I never knew that such a tiny insect carried so many genes beneficial to research. This article is extremely interesting and goes to show that even the tiniest things in life can be so helpful to science.
