Recently, 1,500 scientists attended the 50th annual Drosophila Research Conference. According to researchers, fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most important research animals in genetics. This insect has been used help broaden human knowledge of diseases,
including cancer and depression, and provide a cost-effective and efficient system for testing promising therapies. Beknownst to some, fruit flies and humans share many genes and proteins, making the fruit fly ideal for unraveling biological mysteries. Embryologist and Drosophila researcher, Allan Spradling, can understand the misconception people may have about our relation to insects. He stated, “It’s very, very hard for the average person or congressman to really believe that when we look at an insect it has anything to do with them. But … an organism that seems so foreign and different from us really taught us a lot about our own selves and our genome.”
Questions:
1. If the fuit fly is so significant to scientific research, why haven’t we heard alot about their contributions?
2. What seasons are fruit flies most active?
3. What causes them to become household pests?
