A recent study indicates that overweight women are more likely to give birth to a child with congenital heart defects according to the U.S. government. The study, conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that women that are obese have a 18 percent chance of giving birth to a child with a heart defect while women who are severely obese have a 30 percent chance of giving birth to a child with a heart defect. Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects and they are the leading cause of illness, death and medical expenditures. This study showed that obese women have a greater chance of giving their child a heart defect by the mother’s obesity. The study also stated that if a women if obese and pregnant she should try to get healthier during the pregnancy by seeing their doctor and trying to find a safe way of losing weight.

It it only logical that these two things would be related because over weight females experience many health problems related to their weight. If the mother is not at her healthiest it makes sense that the baby would not recieve the appropriate nutrients, possibly leading to heart defects.

Being overweight it just as bad as being underweight but I don’t think that trying to control a woman’s weight during pregnancy is the best way to solve the problem because the child was already conceived it has already been predisposed to overweight related problems. Aside from that dieting during pregnancy to attempt to control weight does not seem like a safe option because changing a woman’s diet seems a little extreme especially because with dieting we do not know how the body will react and in turn how it will affect the unborn baby.

That makes sense that women with obesity would have children with heart defects but it is very sad to hear. I would think with so many people out their on diet plans and all these different pills on television that the opposite would happen and their would be many women pregnant who are underweight. It is obviously important for pregnant women to take the right precautions for their children.
